Analyze how Miller develops Proctor’s character in Act One by juxtaposing him against Reverend Hale or Giles Corey. Be sure to:
- Include a clearly stated thesis statement that responds to the prompt
- Consider manipulating the prompt to create this thesis. Example: “In The Crucible, Miller develops John Proctor’s character as a [description of Proctor’s character] by juxtaposing him against [foil character]. The contrast between these two characters emphasizes [analytical details about Proctor’s character].”
- Use direct quotations to support your character analysis and provide original commentary after each quotation.
- Be sure to embed these quotations smoothly! Each quote should be used to support your ideas, and you should have at least 2 sentences of commentary for each quotation.
- Vary the syntactic structures within your writing, particularly as you embed quotations.
- Start and end your sentences in a variety of ways, avoid repeating words or phrases, and use sentences of different lengths!
