How to Stage the Act I Scene 1 Fight Scene

  1. Write a detailed 1-2 paragraph response explaining how you would stage the scene from Act 1 of Romeo and Juliet on pages 367-8 of Springboard (p 24-28 in our R & J books). Include details about both the vocal delivery and the visual delivery of the performance. Explain why you think your staging ideas would be effective. Be sure to:

    1. Begin with a topic sentence that: includes TAG (include “Act I Scene 1”); describes the scene (example: “during the fight between…”); makes an argument about the staging (example: “the characters from both houses must be presented as…”)

    2. Identify specific details of the vocal and visual deliveries that are key for a successful performance.

    3. Include an explanation about how you developed your ideas for vocal and visual delivery.

    4. Support analysis with evidence from the scene; consider what the text says and who the characters are. Quote specific words/phrases/lines from the text - keep quotes short!

    5. Explain your ideas using reflective commentary.

Goals are to demonstrate an understanding of how particular words convey meaning that can be interpreted based on their usage and use textual evidence to support analysis of this usage.

Exemplary Work will accurately quote key details from the text by embedding direct quotations and include original commentary that relies on this evidence to support the student’s interpretations.
