Preliminary Claim & Evidence

Your assignment is to begin preparations for Embedded Assessment 2 (EA2), which asks that you

write an essay of argumentation about the value of a college education. Your essay must be organized as an argument in which you assert a precise claim, support it with reasons and evidence, and acknowledge and refute counterclaims.

To begin preparations for the successful completion of EA2, I want you to prepare for me an overview of what you intend to argue, and how you intend to argue it. To do this, you must provide me with:

  1. a Preliminary claim.

    • This is a claim that expresses the position you intend to take on this argument. Because it is preliminary (meaning taking place before the final product/result), this claim may be worded differently when you get around to your final draft, or it may change a little bit after you conduct additional research.

  2. Your planned evidence.

    • Review the texts we have read in Unit 1 and identify which ones support your position or include ideas that will be of value to you when you begin to draft. You must include at least 3 sources in this week’s homework. Each one must be clearly identified with a brief note of what you find valuable about it or how you intend to use it.

  3. A consideration of counterclaims.

Think carefully about the claim you are making. I would like a 1-sentence statement that someone who disagrees with your claim might make. You will have to respond to this position in your final draft, but NOT here; I only want the position of someone who disagrees with you.
